  阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
A
If I were writing a history of my family, some of the darkest moments recorded would be those surrounding Christmas trees. For example, one afternoon dangerously close to Christmas Eve my mother bought a glorious tree which was so full and tall that we could hardly get it into the house. Once we did, my father immediately realized that we would have to hire a carpenter to build a stand for it.
Another December, perhaps the very next one, we bought a tree earlier than we ever had before. We were delighted that its size was manageable. We easily placed it in a stand, decorated it from top to bottom, and then self-satisfiedly sat back by the fire in its soft light. Two or three days passed and the truth could not be hidden; we had bought a tree cut so long ago that it was now shedding it needles. There was nothing to do but undecorate it, take it down, and begin tree shopping again.
Our most recent Christmas tree offered still another challenge. When we brought it home, once again it seemed larger than it was in the great outdoors. To complicate matters, we had bought a new stand, one whose nuts(螺帽) and bolts (闩子) worked more mysteriously than those of our old stands. We persuaded two young neighbors to help us get the tree into the house and set it securely in the stand. Unfortunately, no one noticed the mud on our helpers' shoes, so only after removing several reddish brown spots were we able to discuss the question of where the lights and ornaments (装饰)were stored.
Perhaps those who cut their own trees have tales more painful than these. I don't care to hear them, as my family's experiences , of which these are but three, are enough to cause me to make the following suggestion:" Let's forget the tree next Christmas. Let's simply drape a garland over the mirror in the hall and hang a wreath on the front door.”
21. In the writer’s family, the darkest moments are concerned about __________.
   A. buying cheap Christmas trees
   B. picking suitable Christmas trees
   C. decorating their Christmas trees
   D. finding stands for Christmas trees
22. The new stand was bought for __________.
   A. the two young neighbors
   B. the tree that was cut long gao
   C. the tree that her mother bought
   D. the most recent Christmas tree
23. We can learn from the last paragraph that the writer may___________.
   A. stop celebrating Christmas from then on
   B. get the neighbors to put up their Christmas trees
   C. make other decorations instead of Christmas trees
   D. buy a better and cheaper tree to celebrate Christmas
24. How is the text mainly developed?
   A. By following time order           B. By giving definitions
   C. By making classifications           D. By making comparisons

Employees are being flooded with too much information that has little to do with their work, according to a new survey. On average, white-collar workers spend 51 percent of their work time receiving and processing information. Only one third of it was relevant to their work, the survey found. Information overload for white collar workers has become a global issue. The huge amount of information has already affected their efficiency in management as well as their performance at work.

Every morning, a secretary at the human resources department of an auto parts company opens her e-mail box, only to find it crammed with at least 50 unread mails. For her, even scanning through these e-mails every day takes at least half an hour. Some of her colleagues are not so lucky — they have to read at least 100.

Telephone calls are also causing a problem. More than 40 percent white-collar workers chose mobile phones as the preferred way to communicate important and urgent business matters. Talking saves time and energy over the clicking, reading and replying to e-mails, but phone calls are also more distracting. While answering a call, a clerk is likely to put away a much more important task at hand and start the business being talked about on the phone.

Many companies start with providing staff with better computers, better Internet access and more advanced gadgets(装置). For example, staff members above a certain level in one company will be provided with a blackberry phone for easier access to their e-mails. The company has also organized many lectures on efficient ways of e-mail management. Yet most white-collar workers think their companies can do more.

25. The underlined phrase in Paragraph 2 can be replaced by __________.
   A. filled with             B. decorated with
   C. provided with          D. faced with
26. What problem do telephone calls bring employees?
   A. Taking up their time for e-mails
   B. Interrupting their work at hand
   C. Leaving all their work undone
   D. Wasting too much of their money
27. To settle the problem of information overload, many companies __________.
   A. organize lectures on management
   B. provide more advanced equipment
   C. offer every employee a blackberry phone
   D. reduce employees’ irrelevant e-mails and calls
 28. What is the main idea of this text?
A. Information overload for white-collar workers has become a global issue
B. White-collar workers find ways to cancel useless e-mails
C. Irrelevant calls and e-mails bother white-workers
D. White-collar workers avoid telephone calls

The 10-Chinese-characte resignation letter(辞职信) of a middle school teacher in Zhengzhou of Henan province has spread widely on the Internet. Her letter simply says, “The world is big, and I want to see it.” But it has inspired many young and senior employees to imitate(模仿)interesting resignation letters. What these resignation letters all have in common is that they express the writers’ dissatisfaction with their daily routines, and their eagerness to explore something new.
The resigned teacher belongs to the post-1980 generation, members of which were influenced by individualism(个人主义), different from collectivism rooted in China’s traditional culture. They became the first group in the country to seek individual growth and self-fulfillment. To go after individualism, however, people have to find the answers to questions such as “Who am I?” and “How do I fit into this world?” during their adolescence.
But the post-1980 generation began to think about these questions only after reaching adulthood, when they also meet with the questions of how to seek creativity and self-development. The struggle between those thoughts has caused some young people to quit their jobs to pursue their goals. The post-1980 generation’s late self-discovery could be due to monetary and educational limitation during their adolescence.
The gap year, a period between high school graduation and college, is quite popular among youngsters in the West. It helps youths understand themselves and the world better. But the different education system and severe academic competition in China do not allow the post-1980 generation to experience the word in any gap year. After they mature, they find that the possibilities in life and the world are more than they could imagine. So when they meet with inertia(惰性)in their adulthood, when their flat office job becomes boring, they are eager to explore the world and make up for their absent dreams during their adolescence.
32. The middle school teacher’s resignation letter______.
   A. catches little attention on the Internet.
   B. tells her dissatisfaction with her boss.
   C. explains her resignation in detail
   D. shows her willingness to explore
33. Which of the following is true about the post-1980 generation?
   A. They ignore traditional culture.
   B. They fail to develop creativity
   C. They understand themselves late.
   D. They receive the worst education
34. It can be inferred that the gap year helps the young______.
   A. perform better in academic competition
   B. prepare for further education or career
   C. gain international working experience.
   D. fulfill their adolescent dreams.
35. What is the writer’s attitude towards the resignation letter?
   A. Supportive      B. Defensive.
   C. Critical        D. Neutral.

Some people make it effortless to have a warm conversation with a complete stranger. For the rest of us, however, starting a conversation may require more effort. Here are a few tips of conversational skills.
Mind your body language. Try to keep your body relaxed and open rather than closed off and rigid. Don’t clench(握紧) your fists. Adopt a slightly more casual, relaxed posture. When seated, don’t cross arms and legs.  36
37   Figure out the common ground you share. Maybe you’re both sitting in the same corner. Maybe the companions of invitees have temporarily abandoned you. Or perhaps both of you are direct friends of a host, having never met preciously.
Turn to humor.  38  In this way, they protect themselves from a number of unenviable(令人不快的)circumstances. Consequently, they’re difficult to engage in conversation with those types of conversational skills. Your greatest weapon is humor. Laughter can warm up the most socially cold person. 高考英语模拟试题库
39   Keep current on world and local affairs. Or if all of the world news seems depressing beyond belief, you might want to come prepared with light-hearted news stories that you can easily find online. This is not to say that serious topics and current affairs are off limits in social conversation.  40
And let’s not forget the primary guideline that makes all of these smaller guidelines possible---relax! If you stay relaxed, then starting a conversation will come far more naturally to you in any situation. Have fun!
A. Relate to the person.
B. Select proper topics.
C. Stay away from political issues.
D. Many people keep silent in social situations.
E. They don’t make for the best ice breakers, though.
F. So you’re better off saving them for a better surrounding.
G. Engage with your eyes rather than looking down and away all the time.
